How to Recognize Genuine Silk

Let’s talk about silk itself, so that you can buy authentic silk scarves with certainty. Here are some basics to know:

Silk thread is the raw material used to make silk fabric. It comes from the filament produced by silkworms during their growth process.
Silk fabric can be woven from many different materials, but the finest, most traditional, and most valuable is silk made from pure silk thread. That’s why, today, many people equate the word “silk” with mulberry silk.

Scarves woven from natural silk thread have a slight natural wrinkle. When you touch them, they feel light, soft, and smooth. Compared to scarves of the same size made from other materials, silk scarves are lighter and give a distinctly pleasant hand-feel.

If you burn a strand of silk thread, you’ll notice it burns without a flame, produces white smoke, and smells like burning hair. The ash crumbles easily into fine particles when pressed.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

Dry Cleaning (Recommended):

The best way to preserve silk is to have it dry-cleaned.

Hand Washing:

Wash by hand in cold water. Use only mild shampoo or body wash. Do not use detergent, soap, or bleach.
Do not rub vigorously or wring. Gently squeeze out water by pressing softly.
For stains: clean only the affected area with shampoo/body wash and rub gently until the stain is removed.

Drying, Ironing & Storage:

Air dry in a cool, shaded, and well-ventilated place. Avoid direct sunlight, which may cause fading.
Iron on the reverse side at the “silk” setting.
Store in a dedicated compartment or drawer to best preserve the product.

SPECIFIC NOTES

For Silk Scarves:

Minimize washing; instead, air the scarf in a cool place after use.
When drying, stretch the scarf gently to reduce wrinkles.

For Silk Ties:

Untie the knot immediately after use to help the tie return to its original shape.
